Which sort of Bluetooth is this?
Casambi uses its own lighting mesh over Bluetooth Low Energy. It is not a promise of interoperability with arbitrary BLE buttons, Bluetooth SIG Mesh/NLC lamps, or a Home Assistant Bluetooth proxy. Those are different application systems even where the same 2.4GHz radio technology is involved. The plain BLE-button-to-Wi-Fi-light arrangement discussed in the LIFX forum is a different architecture again.
A complete physical-control path
A battery-powered Casambi Xpress-LR wall controller sends Casambi commands to a CBU-TED-LR dimmer. That dimmer applies trailing-edge phase control to the ordinary dimmable SAL downlight, whose driver is integral. Both Casambi products are configured into the same network using a compatible existing iOS/Android phone and the free Casambi app. Once commissioned, the physical controller does not need that phone sitting nearby as a permanent gateway.
- Casambi CBU-TED-LR trailing-edge dimmer, 230V-region version: AUD141.35 (about USD97.53). Linear Lux; including GST.
- Casambi Xpress-LR white, CB-XPRESS-LR-W, wall bracket and CR2430 cell: AUD354.20 (about USD244.40). Linear Lux; including GST; exact white variant listed in stock.
- SAL WAVE S9065TCWH complete 9W downlight, integral driver and flex/plug: AUD10.60 (about USD7.31). Sparky Direct; including GST.
The official Xpress-LR datasheet describes the contained CR2430 coin cell and included magnetic wall bracket. No separate button supply or gateway is missing. The retailer's public catalogue markup listed the exact white CB-XPRESS-LR-W variant as purchasable at this price, with 18 in stock; the dimmer listing showed 150. These are dated stock observations, not reservations.
Read the correct electrical datasheet
For the 230V-region CBU-TED-LR, Casambi specifies trailing-edge dimming, a 1W minimum load and up to 100W/0.43A at 230V under its stated conditions, including a 10A/100ms maximum inrush condition. Do not copy the retailer page's conflicting generic 200W/DALI description. This selected device is not a DALI bus power supply or 0–10V interface, and this build does not use either bus.
SAL specifies the selected 9W WAVE with an integral trailing-edge dimmable driver. That is an appropriate interface/load category for this design, not a claim the exact pair has been bench-tested or that every low-end setting is flicker-free. The installer must confirm driver compatibility/inrush and commission a stable minimum dim level. Its physical colour selector does not become wireless colour-temperature control just because Xpress has multifunction buttons.
Literal wiring and setup
The Xpress wall position needs no new control cable: it is battery-powered wireless BLE/Casambi. The dimmer still needs mains supply/neutral and mains-rated switched/dimmed wiring to the downlight; the light does not receive power wirelessly. No Cat5e bus or separate LED PSU is required. Provide approved mains enclosure/mounting and any controlled socket arrangement required by the plug-equipped light, along with circuit protection and isolation. These necessary site items and electrician work are quoted separately, not included in the hardware subtotal.
Use an Evolution network/radio mode supported by both LR devices. Long-range operation requires the appropriate network mode and all participating devices to support it; the suffix is not a guaranteed distance through Australian walls. Assign the Xpress to this luminaire or a one-light group, configure on/off and dimming, set appropriate restoration behaviour and save the network's access/admin information securely. No custom software or paid commissioning licence is needed for this small example; a competent lighting installer may nevertheless be valuable.
Effort and expansion
This is moderate commissioning work plus licensed electrical installation, rather than an entirely DIY radio accessory. Local light control needs neither a continuously running PC nor mandatory internet/cloud subscription. A remote-access gateway is an optional separate addition, not part of the minimum.
The physical controller can be reused for additional assigned lights. Another one-channel dimmer plus complete WAVE is AUD151.95 (about USD104.85) before installation. Do not calculate capacity by multiplying 9W lamps up to a theoretical 100W: driver inrush, permitted loading, heat and wiring still constrain the design. For new purchases, obtain the locally appropriate compliant version from the Australian supplier rather than assuming a US-labelled unit is interchangeable.
Price basis
Prices checked 8 November 2026 (Australia/Sydney). These are Australian listings, not US kits. USD figures are converted equivalents using RBA 6 November 2026: AUD1 = USD0.6900, rounded to cents; converted totals use the unrounded AUD sum. GST is confirmed only where stated above; the other extracted listings did not establish tax inclusion. Stock and offers can change. Subtotals exclude shipping, cables/building wiring, duties if importing, labour and the separately identified site items. No purchases or hardware testing are claimed.
