One circuit, two control methods
A normal Clipsal wall switch feeds the Shelly Wave 1 AU's local switch input. The relay switches an ordinary SAL downlight. For network control, Home Assistant Green runs the free Z-Wave JS service and communicates through an Australian Aeotec USB controller. There is no separate vendor cloud or dealer software licence in this example.
Choose Wave 1 AU QNSW-001X16AU, not an EU/US Wave 1 because the name looks similar. It has a dry-contact on/off relay, local switch/push-button input, S2 support and a 16A maximum subject to its load/installation conditions. It is not a dimmer or electricity meter. The 16A headline is not an LED-driver design calculation. For LED drivers the manufacturer's supported-load guidance calls for an RC snubber, which is included here.
- Home Assistant Green, INF-HAGREEN: AUD349.00 (about USD240.81). homecurrent; GST basis not stated.
- AVE PSU-12V1A Australian 12V 1A centre-positive supply, 5.5 × 2.1mm: AUD19.00 (about USD13.11). Wwave; including GST.
- Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro AU, ZWA060-B: AUD89.00 (about USD61.41). SmartHome; including GST.
- Shelly Wave 1 AU, QNSW-001X16AU: AUD26.99 (about USD18.62). Ohmly; GST basis not stated.
- Shelly-compatible RC-SNUBBER: AUD9.89 (about USD6.82). SmartHome; including GST.
- Clipsal C2031VA-WE complete one-gang switch: AUD7.79 (about USD5.38). MJS Electrical; including GST.
- SAL WAVE S9065TCWH complete 9W downlight, integral driver and flex/plug: AUD10.60 (about USD7.31). Sparky Direct; including GST.
Home Assistant Green has no Zigbee or Z-Wave radio built in. This budget deliberately adds the radio and an Australian supply: the international Green box has EU/US/UK plug adapters, not an AU plug. Its included Ethernet lead connects to an existing router/free LAN port. An existing phone/computer and internet for initial downloads are reused, at AUD0 / USD0 additional purchase cost here; those are assumptions, not free equipment for a new house. Green needs 12V DC, 1A, centre positive, 5.5 × 2.1mm, not USB power or PoE.
Radio region, software and commissioning
The selected ZWA060-B is Aeotec's AU variant; the other suffixes are different regions. Use the Australia/New Zealand region in Z-Wave JS. Shelly's AU manual lists 919.8MHz and Aeotec's AU headline lists 921.42MHz: these regional channel descriptions are not a reason to substitute a European 868MHz or US 908MHz product. Select documented ANZ hardware and ANZ controller configuration, not a dongle with an attractive overseas price. Do not assume US Long Range claims apply in Australia.
Home Assistant explicitly lists Z-Stick 10 Pro support. Use current supported controller firmware and the Z-Wave JS app/service, select its Z-Wave serial interface, then include the Wave using the manufacturer's documented inclusion/SmartStart procedure and retain its security/DSK information privately. Its separate Zigbee radio is not needed for this light. No Mosquitto or Zigbee application is needed for this chosen Z-Wave path.
Configure the wired input for the chosen maintained switch and local relay operation, set power-restoration behaviour deliberately, then test local and network control. Inclusion and device parameters are intermediate commissioning skills, not mains-work permission.
Literal wiring
Wave needs its specified mains supply and neutral at the module. Mains-rated lighting/control conductors connect the ordinary switch, relay and light according to the manual; switch terminals are not general SELV sensor inputs. The radio link is wireless sub-GHz Z-Wave. Green uses the supplied Ethernet patch lead, Cat5e or better, to the router, and USB to the controller. There is no separate two-wire Z-Wave bus, and Ethernet cable does not carry the switched light load.
Required site items, not hidden in the subtotal
An electrician must also allow for suitable approved enclosure/backbox and mounting, protected mains circuit, required neutral/earth arrangements, mains-rated connections and an appropriate controlled outlet if using the plug-equipped downlight. These are required installation items, not optional smart-home accessories; they need a site quote in addition to the priced components. Do not leave a module or live terminals loose above a ceiling or in a demonstration box. Australian fixed mains wiring is licensed-electrician work. The driver and light are included in the SAL item; no separate LED power supply is missing.
Cost of expanding and level of effort
Reusable Green, AU supply and AU controller are AUD457.00 (about USD315.33). A further independent relay/switch/snubber/complete-light basket is AUD55.27 (about USD38.14) before installation. Adding several lights to one suitable relay switches them together, not independently. Range, inrush, protective devices and enclosure temperature still need checking.
The electrician handles fixed wiring and protective devices; an owner comfortable with Home Assistant can handle inclusion, backups and dashboard setup. With local input correctly configured, loss of Green need not stop the wired wall switch, while controller-driven scenes will stop. App remote access is optional and not included; do not expose the controller directly to the internet.
Price basis
Prices checked 8 November 2026 (Australia/Sydney). These are Australian listings, not US kits. USD figures are converted equivalents using RBA 6 November 2026: AUD1 = USD0.6900, rounded to cents; converted totals use the unrounded AUD sum. GST is confirmed only where stated above; the other extracted listings did not establish tax inclusion. Stock and offers can change. Subtotals exclude shipping, cables/building wiring, duties if importing, labour and the separately identified site items. No purchases or hardware testing are claimed.
