Matter is the common language; Thread is one way to carry it
Matter defines application-level behaviour for devices such as lights, sensors and locks. Its normal communications run over IP using Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. Thread is a low-power IPv6 mesh network, not a competing set of lighting commands.

This distinction matters when selecting hardware. A Wi-Fi Matter bulb and a Thread Matter bulb can belong to the same Matter ecosystem, but only the Thread device needs Thread network connectivity. Bluetooth LE commonly helps during commissioning; it is not the ongoing transport for normal Matter lighting control.

The roles in a working setup
  • A Matter-certified light or compatible bridge exposing supported lighting devices.
  • A Matter controller in your chosen ecosystem to manage/control the device. It may be built into a hub, speaker or automation platform.
  • For Thread devices, a compatible Thread border router connecting the Thread mesh to the home IP network.
  • For Wi-Fi devices, suitable Wi-Fi coverage; for Ethernet devices, the required wired connection.
  • A commissioning phone/app or other supported commissioner, plus the device's setup code.
A border router and a Matter controller are different functions, even when one box provides both. Buying a Thread border router alone does not guarantee a complete Matter control system. Nor does owning a Zigbee coordinator make it a Thread border router.

Getting started
Choose one supported device, check its transport and your controller's supported features, and commission it using the platform's documented process. Verify on/off, dimming and any colour functions actually offered before expanding. Matter does not guarantee every vendor-specific effect or scene is exposed by every controller.

Matter supports local communications without requiring an internet round trip for every command. Initial setup, accounts, updates, remote access and voice services can still have ecosystem-specific internet requirements. Keep setup codes private and save recovery information securely.

This guide is based on the specifications, not a claim of testing a particular device combination. Fixed-wired lighting and switch installation in Australia require an appropriately licensed electrician.
