What is C-Bus?
Clipsal's C-Bus, now also branded SpaceLogic C-Bus, is a wired control system for lighting and other building services. A wall button sends a command over the control network; a relay, dimmer or another compatible unit performs the action. The button does not have to carry the lighting load itself.

This separates where you operate a light from where its power is switched. Several buttons can control one group, and a scene can set several groups to different levels. Other equipment can be integrated, but the correct interfaces and supported applications still matter.

Hardware to plan
  • C-Bus key inputs or sensors, plus compatible output units selected for the actual loads.
  • The specified C-Bus cable and approved C-Bus network power supplies, including any integrated supplies in output units.
  • A supported PC/network interface and commissioning computer/software appropriate to the exact product generation.
  • Optional automation controller, touchscreen or integration gateway for schedules, logic and other systems.
A dimmable LED is not automatically compatible with every dimmer. Check driver type, inrush, channel ratings and the manufacturer's compatibility guidance before choosing the output hardware.

Getting started
Start with a written point list: button location, intended lighting group, output channel and required scene. Have a C-Bus-experienced installer design the network power, clock and burden arrangements, then commission a small approved demonstration before extending the design. Basic distributed C-Bus control need not depend on a continuously running PC; additional logic and integration may depend on a controller.

For an existing installation, obtain the project backup and device inventory before changing anything. A group label in software is not proof of which physical circuit it operates. Confirm mappings with the installer rather than experimenting on occupied premises.

This is a planning guide based on manufacturer documents, not a claim of a tested installation. Australian mains installation and load connections require an appropriately licensed electrician.
